Newsletter 3/17 - Beginning of 7’s Season and Club Update

Hello BRFC family! Welcome back to the newsletter. After some well-deserved rest during the winter, I am happy to announce that BRFC is back. The team has recently resumed practicing temporarily on Garcleon Field. Since the weather is only beginning to warm up, Page Field is unavailable. However, the team has done a good job in fighting for field space during this time of year. Despite the lack of a grass pitch, we have still been shaking off some rust and preparing our rookies for the 7’s season, a type of rugby they have never seen before.

If you haven't heard, women’s rugby has also resumed training! As we have been working hard preparing our rookies for the 7’s season, women’s rugby has been right beside us. In addition, per the newly elected women’s club rugby leadership, their jerseys have been taken out of storage! We are incredibly excited to see what the future holds for women’s club rugby and we look forward to assisting them in any means possible with this endeavor. Make sure to keep up with them on Instagram at @bateswomensclubrugby.

Thus far, we have a few 7’s tournaments scheduled for the spring, including UNH on March 29th, Curry College on April 20th, and the Maine Cup on May 4th. There may also be scrimmages with Colby and Bowdoin later on. With our first tournament of the season quickly approaching, the team is fired up and eager to train harder every day, hoping to see it pay off in the games.

I have recently spoken to an alumni who is interested in organizing an alumni touch match on June 7th. We are still figuring out the details about the event, but it would be great to have many alumnus in attendance. If you are interested in that, feel free to reach out to me at fhokello@bates.edu.

Best,

Fernando Hokello
