Newsletter 5/6 - Maine Cup, Season Recap, and FBA Challenge
Hello BRFC Alums,
We are back with a Maine Cup and 7’s season recap, as well as some information about the upcoming Friends of Bates Athletics (FBA) challenge. We had a great time at the Maine cup a couple weekends ago, getting off to a hot start and beating talented teams on both the A side and B side. We first started with the A side taking on a Colby side in which we had a strong showing and won handily. Next the B side took on the Colby B side and also played a great game and took them down as well. The B side then played a strong Bowdoin B side and played some great rugby and unfortunately lost.
The A side then came back and played a Bowdoin side that was very strong and much improved since our last meeting in March. The boys came out and played a very strong match though, with Sophomore President Fernando Hokello scoring three tries and Junior Peter Lee scoring a fourth try to secure the win for the lads.
We then had a quick break for lunch before heading back out there for the playoffs. We started with the B side who were playing in the 3rd place game. They played a very big and very strong UNE team and we were pretty banged up so we ended up dropping that match as well, securing the 4th place spot.
The A side next faced Colby for the second time. While we played a strong match, Colby played strongly as well, and we made some crucial mistakes and penalties. We unfortunately lost that match by one try, but the lads played a valiant game. We ended up having two all stars, Senior Hunter Norton, and Sophomore President Fernando Hokello, who both had dominant performances throughout the day.
Overall we played a great 7s season of Rugby and while we were not able to win the Maine Cup or earn the chance to play in nationals, the team showed massive growth and secured some wins over very talented teams.
Looking forward to this weekend we have the Friends of Bates Athletics (FBA) challenge. This is the biggest fundraising event of the year for us and the money that our generous donors give us is what enables us to do everything we do, from tournament fees, to hotel rooms, and much more. We will also be pushing out more information about fun activities we will be doing to incentivize donation on our instagram page. If anyone has any questions regarding the FBA challenge, please do not hesitate to reach out to me via email.
Best,
