Newsletter 4/20 - 7’s Season Update

Hello BRFC Alums,

We’re back with another 7’s update! Last weekend the lads traveled to Durham, NH to compete in the UNH Lt. Scott Milley Tournament. During this tournament we utilized some of our younger developing players in an effort to preserve our A-side for a national qualifier tournament on Sunday at Springfield College. We fought valiantly against Norwich, UVM, and Bowdoin but walked away without any hardware. The highlight of the day was another try by breakout star Stuart “Stu” Saltonstall who has continued to be a try machine.

That night we stayed in Sturbridge, Massachusetts and prepared for the next day's tournament at Springfield College. The boys were excited for the last minute opportunity to play in a national qualifier. On Sunday the A-side took the field and looked dominant to start, taking down Colgate and Curry handily. Next, we faced Endicott and unfortunately did not fare as well. The Endicott squad played very clean and technical rugby and our side could not keep up. We bounced back in a big way however, taking down Holy Cross and Bryant and winning the consolation bracket, earning our first piece of hardware for the 7’s season.

While we unfortunately did not earn a national qualifying spot, we played some great rugby and faced some stellar competition. Some of the highlights from Sunday were senior Augie Reardon's big tackle on a national award winning player that got the team hyped up, and Peter Lee’s masterful performance throughout the whole day. President Fernando Hokello also pulled off a near impossible feat, scoring a try while the team was playing two men down due to penalties.

We are looking forward to next weekend when we will head up to Waterville to defend our Maine Cup victory from last year. The boys have had their eyes set on bringing the Maine Cup back to Bates for another year since the beginning of the season and are optimistic about our chances next weekend.

Best,

Alumni Liaison,
